Glowworms and beaches

An early start today to visit Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Photos aren't allowed, so you'll need to make do with this stock photo.

It was a tour of limestome caves, where glowworms live and catch their prey. The highlight was a deadly silent and dark boat ride, that glided gently underneath the glowworms.


We then said goodbye to our scenic campsite (see us circled below), and took a scenic drive to Waihi beach.

We had an intensely sunny afternoon on the beach and in the sea, before settling into some of Stu's amazing homemade food.

Arrived in New Zealand

Sat 8 Feb 2025 - arrived in New Zealand!     Almost 36 hours after leaving Bristol, we have made it... s o jet lagged and tired. We're not staying anywhere too auspicious yet - near the airport and near where we will pick up the campervan on Monday. We had ourselves a celebratory arrival dinner - 25 degrees C and sunny. @Andrew Maxwell - thanks for the food tips, most useful, and we will certainly be using those. Finally, we tried and stay awake for just for a little bit longer to get our bodies adjusted to the right time zone.

Bon voyage... to us!

Fri 7 Feb (in New Zealand, Thu 6 Feb in UK!) Just said goodbye to mum and dad today (and to Aneel and Deepti via video call last night). Treating ourselves on the outward bound flight! Bert and Ernie are very happy.

Fantastic valleys, lakes and mountains

Mon 17 Feb 2025 Arthur's Pass was open, and we got there before they closed it again! Today the scenery got very serious, as we took a day's driving through valleys, around mountains and alongside lakes. This is lake Pukaki, our final stop heading to our campsite, where we hope the weather will hold for boating to a glacier at Mount Cook. Unfortunately, the water supply in our campervan started playing up again last night. So we spent time on the phone to our hire company trying to solve the problem. The situation is stop/start with no real help from the company.  This evening, we have got it working again (and briefly during the day). We're trying hard not to be grumped by it.
