Day packed full of geothermal birthday activities

Thu 13 Feb 2025

Today being Susheel's birthday, we packed it absolutely full of activities and almost 21km of walking - we were exhausted by the end!

We started the day with an early morning run around Kuirau public park where many geothermal features can be seen for free right in the city.

Later we hiked to a lookout point to watch a hot geyser eject forth its hot jets. The Pōhutu Geyser (left below) erupts up to twenty times a day to a height of up to 30m.

During the afternoon, we were booked into Hell's Gate Spa, where we toured some geothermal sights including bubbling mud pools, hot sulphur pools, and bodies of water as high as 100 degrees C!

This was followed by wood carving and then a dip in safer spa pools and a mud bath (no cameras allowed, so we've included a stock photo off the Internet).

We finished the night treating ourselves to food and drink at the Rotorua Thursday night Street Food Market.
